Best Ways To Break Fast In Diabetes

The simple fact that we have to wait for nearly 12 hours after dinner for our next meal, signifies the expectation one put on the breakfast. It is the first meal that a person has and invariably sets the tone for the day. A good breakfast is a great way to start a day on a positive note.

All this has many more connotations for people who have dietary restriction to manage any of the diseases they might have. One such group is the people with diabetes. They have severe restriction on the type of food they can consume. For such people a good breakfast, for that matter any good meal, means a lot.

Breakfast can be a great way to start the day. If it's healthy, it can make you feel better, both physically and mentally. Studies have suggested kids even perform better in school when they've eaten breakfast. Here a few simple aspects for a better breakfast are discussed.

Those with elevated blood sugar or triglycerides, insulin resistance would have to take great care not to over do the luxury of food and thus end up in trouble. Same is the case with those people who have taken strong resolutions to lose weight! Most foods we eat in the morning, whether at home or office, or fast food joints or on the way to work are high in carbohydrates.

The main food items that have carbohydrates include breads, biscuits, croissants, bagels, muffins, cereals, pancakes, potatoes, juices, oranges, grapefruit, bananas, grapes, whole, low fat or skim milk, yogurt, sugar, donuts, cinnamon buns, and pastries.

Most of these foods are converted into blood glucose, or blood sugar after they goes through the digestive system. Hence it need not be said that excess amounts of carbohydrates leads to increased levels of blood glucose. To further worsen the matters, carbohydrates that are not burned for energy are stored as fats. This can cause weight gain and elevated triglyceride levels in some individuals.

If you have insulin resistance, eating too much carbohydrate at one time can elevate your blood glucose, causing your body to secrete too much insulin. Excess insulin in the blood is unhealthy for the blood vessels and can increase the risk of heart disease.

Eating a reduced or more moderate amount of high-fiber carbohydrate with a protein food may improve blood glucose, triglycerides, and insulin resistance. Milk, is good source of calcium and potassium, is always a good addition. A limited amount of fruit, around one-half cup, may be used if blood glucose values are within a moderate range.

People commonly think of fruit as a good provider of vitamin C, yet a number of vegetables can serve as an excellent substitute source for vitamin C. These include tomatoes, cabbage, broccoli, spinach, collards and kale.

These foods are not harmful if taken with a sense of caution. The bottomline is not to overdo the whole thing and to remain within the same limits.
