Diabetes And Sweets: The Real Truth
The real truth is . . . all foods affect your blood sugar.
It is true that carbohydrates have the most direct effect on your blood sugar levels. Carbohydrates are found in breads, cereals, grains, fruits, milk, yogurt, vegetables and sweets. The real truth is that all these foods affect your blood sugar, not just sweets!
Eating the same amount of carbohydrates at each meal can help you control your blood sugar. It is not healthy to avoid carbohydrates; just control the amount that you eat.
Sweets - How dangerous are they?
If you have Diabetes, the best carbohydrates to eat are the "slow digesting ones." These foods are complex carbohydrates and take time to be absorbed in to the blood stream. This makes them safer. Sweets usually contain high concentrations of carbohydrates (sugars) and most sweets contain simple carbohydrates as sugars. These can be broken down and absorbed by the body quickly, all at a time.
This can raise your blood sugar levels dangerously as your body cannot cope with the sudden surge in the glucose levels. Hence, Diabetics are instructed and advised to avoid sweets, even in small quantities.
