The Mental Challenge

Acceptance Vs Denials

You are not alone if your diabetes diagnosis probably left you feeling confused and overwhelmed. You may be having trouble accepting the fact that you are diabetic. Many people dread diabetes so much that never believe that they have diabetes. "Not me. "is what they think .Most people go through denial when they are first diagnosed with diabetes. "I don’t believe it. There must be some mistake," they say.

That first reaction of denial is so common that some doctors think it’s part of the process of accepting the diagnosis.

The trouble comes when the first reaction doesnt die down! when people keep on denying their diabetes. This process continued long-term is dangerous as denial stops them from learning what they need to know to keep them healthy. It can take time to overcome denial, but the sooner you accept your diagnosis and begin learning about your diabetes, the sooner you'll achieve independence and good health under your care plan.

How to recognise denial?

If you catch yourself thinking or saying them, you are avoiding some part of your diabetes care.

One bite of sweet is not a problem.

The diagnosis was probably wrong, ill see a better doctor later

I feel absolutely fine ,i dont need to take drugs now

This sore will heal by itself.

I’ll go to the doctor later.

I don’t have time for all of the care plan.

My diabetes isn’t serious. I only have to take a pill, not injections.

Dangers of denial

Denying that your diabetes is serious lets you avoid self-care. It shields you from the fact that diabetes is a lifelong, chronic illness, which, if left untreated, can result in complications. Denial also lets your family and friends pretend that "nothing is wrong." This can be dangerous any denial sabotages your health care.
The practical dangers of denial among indians:

Not testing.

Ignoring your meal plan.

Ignoring seeing a registered dietitian.

Not asking your family to change what they eat.

Not having healthy food at work.

Not excercising.

Not checking your feet each day.

Smoking.

What you can do ?

Accept that denial is human. It’s bound to crop up from time to time. the real test is in recognising denial and not letting it affect your care plan

Write down your diabetes care plan and your health care goals.

Understand why each item in your plan is important.

Accept that it will take time to reach your goals.

Tell your friends and family how they can help. Let them know that encouraging you to go off your plan is not a kindness. Inform them about how you take care of your diabetes

Be honest to your diabetis care plan

"Don’t worry. Your diabetes is not serious enough to hurt you." .Any one making this statement is lying ! diabetes is never less serious only proper care is your best friend against getting hurt.
