Common Cares

Infections

Several changes in the working of the body due to diabetes ,make people with diabetes more susceptible to infections. The reasons for the increased tendency to catch infections is both due to the high blood sugar and the changes in bloodflow and vasculature that take place with diabetes.

The reasons:

people with diabetes may not be aware of injuries to their feet, legs, or hands because of
numbness and the injuries may become infected.
High blood sugar levels are indicted in the growth of some bacteria and yeast.
High blood sugar levels may impair white blood cells ,an important part of the body's defence system ,from fighting infections well.
Poor blood supply to feet and legs in diabetes can prevent the body's immune system from
fighting off infection in even small cuts and scrapes .

The type of infections which commonly bother those with diabetes are

Bladder and/or kidney infections
Candidiasis, gum disease, and other mouth infections
Fungal infections
Vaginal infections in women
wound infections
foot infections.

How can I avoid getting infections ?

Foot infections
Skin infections
Mouth and Gum infections

A constant look out for infections is a must as even a small infection, may not heal well and may develop into a potentially life- threatening problem.Be aware of your increased risk of infections and the serious complications of infections that are not treated.

The doctor must be consulted right away if you suspect something is wrong (for example,Changes in the color or odor of your urine, or burning or painful urination.),you have fever or if a minor injury is not healing. Never forget to immediately report any tingling, numbness, or change in color or sensation in your fingertips and toes.

The best way hoever to prevent and control these infections is to keep your diabetes under control and to have regular blood tests and regular follow-up visits.
