Infections
Several changes in the working of the body due
to diabetes ,make people with diabetes more susceptible to
infections.The reasons for the increased tendency to catch
infections is both due to the high blood sugar and the changes
in bloodflow and vasculature that take place with diabetes.
The reasons:
people
with diabetes may not be aware of injuries to their feet,
legs, or hands because of
numbness and the injuries may become infected.
High
blood sugar levels are indicted in the growth of some bacteria
and yeast.
High
blood sugar levels may impair white blood cells ,an important
part of the body's defence system ,from fighting infections
well.
Poor
blood supply to feet and legs in diabetes can prevent the
body's immune system from
fighting off infection in even small cuts and scrapes .

Candidiasis,
gum disease, and other mouth infections
Fungal
infections
Vaginal
infections in women

infections.

A constant look out for infections is a must as even a small
infection, may not heal well and may develop into a potentially
life- threatening problem.Be aware of your increased risk
of infections and the serious complications of infections
that are not treated.
The doctor must be consulted right away if you suspect something
is wrong (for example,Changes in the color or odor of your
urine, or burning or painful urination.),you have fever or
if a minor injury is not healing. Never forget to immediately
report any tingling, numbness, or change in color or sensation
in your fingertips and toes.
The best way hoever to prevent and control these infections
is to keep your diabetes under control and to have regular
blood tests and regular follow-up visits.
